Can I Take the State Certification Exam After the Course?

One of the most common questions we get at Texas School of Phlebotomy is:
“Can I take the state certification exam after completing the course?”

It’s an important question, and the short answer is: Yes, you can take a certification exam, but there is no state certification for phlebotomy or EKG in Texas.

Let’s break down everything you need to know about national certification exams, eligibility, exam prep, and whether or not you need a certification to land a job in the field.

Is Certification Required to Get a Job in Texas?

No, passing the national certification exam is not required to get a job in phlebotomy or EKG in Texas.

We have many students who have successfully gained employment without certification. For example, Sydney, a recent graduate from our China Grove campus, was offered a phlebotomy job at UT Health in San Antonio before she even finished class, meaning she hadn’t yet taken the national certification exam. She was hired based on her skills, training, and initiative.

However, while certification is not mandatory, it can help you get hired more quickly and potentially earn a higher starting wage.

Still wondering, “Can I take the certification exam after the course?” The answer is YES, and we’re here to guide you through it step by step.

What State Certification Exam Options Are Available?

At TSP, we recommend that students challenge the national certification exams through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

You can become certified in:

  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)
  • Certified EKG Technician (CET)

We strongly encourage students to take both classes and earn both certifications, as this makes you more competitive in the job market and opens more doors than having just one.

When Can I Take the Certification Exam?

Students are eligible to take the national exam immediately after passing the course and paying off any remaining balance. As long as your tuition has been paid in full, you can register for your exam.

You’ll register and pay for your exam directly through the NHA, and then return to the campus to take your exam.

Does TSP Provide Exam Prep?

TSP does not offer formal exam prep, but the NHA provides study guides and practice materials available for purchase on their site.
Students often also use free community-created tools such as:

  • Quizlet
  • Kahoot
  • Practice tests and prep books are available on Amazon

We remind students:
YOU GOT THIS!
You’ve been preparing for this exam throughout the entire course. When you sit for the exam:

  • Read each question exactly as it is written
  • Don’t second-guess yourself by going back and changing answers
  • Trust your training and your first instincts

What Happens After I Take the Exam?

After completing your exam:

  • You’ll see your results immediately inside your NHA portal
  • You can also download your certificate
  • Your certification is valid for two years

To maintain your certification, you’ll need to complete 10 continuing education units (CEUs) during that period.
This can include:

  • Taking another TSP course, like the IV Workshop
  • Potentially enrolling in Phlebotomy or EKG if you haven’t already
  • Renewing your BLS CPR certification when due

Do I Need to Schedule the Exam Through TSP?

No. Registering for the certification exam is the student’s responsibility, but if you need help, we’re happy to point you in the right direction.
Often, we recommend students contact the NHA directly, as their support team can assist with the registration process step by step.

Final Thoughts on Certification Exam

While it’s not legally required to become certified in Texas, earning your national certification shows employers you’re serious about your new career.
It demonstrates your knowledge, adds credibility to your resume, and can give you a competitive edge.

Whether you choose to certify right away or after working in the field, know this:
We believe in you. You’ve been preparing from day one.
